Itaewon Class (2020)

“Itaewon Class” is the live-action adaptation of the manhwa of the same name.

Seventeen-year-old Park Saeroyi moves with his father to the headquarters of his employer, the Jangga Group, in Kwangjin, South Korea. This also means that Saeroyi has to change secondary schools. His strong sense of justice is put to the test on the very first day: Geun-won, the son of the president of the Jangga Group, bullies a classmate in front of all the students and the teacher in the class – and everyone looks the other way! But Saeroyi intervenes and hurts Geun-won in the process. This automatically leads to expulsion from school and the intervention of the police unless the injured party waives it. To demonstrate his goodwill, Geun-won’s father refrains from calling the police but insists on an apology for remaining at school. Saeroyi, however, refuses to give the excuse. For the employed father, the situation is very difficult at first because he is involved in the power structures of society. However, when it comes to further action against Saeroyi, he stands behind his son and quits his job.

Subsequently, he renovates a pub together with his son and opens it. One evening, while Saeroyi is waiting for his father to return, it is not his father who appears but the police. The police tell him that his father has died in a hit-and-run accident. Saeroyi’s life changes abruptly.

»Itaewon Class« ist die Live-Action Umsetzung des gleichnamigen Manhwa.

Der siebzehnjährige Park Saeroyi zieht mit seinem Vater an den Hauptsitz dessen Arbeitgebers, der Jangga-Group, im südkoreanischen Kwangjin. Damit muss Saeroyi auch die Oberschule wechseln. Sein ausgeprägter Gerechtigkeitssinn wird dort bereits am ersten Tag auf die Probe gestellt: Geun-won, der Sohn des Präsidenten der Jangga-Group, mobbt vor allen Schülern und dem Lehrer in der Klasse einen Mitschüler – und alle schauen weg! Doch Saeroyi greift ein und verletzt dabei Geun-won. Dies führt automatisch zum Schulverweis und dem Einschreiten der Polizei, außer der Geschädigte verzichtet darauf. Um seinen guten Willen zu demonstrieren, verzichtet der Vater von Geun-won zwar auf das Hinzuziehen der Polizei, besteht aber auf eine Entschuldigung für den weiteren Verbleib an der Schule. Saeroyi weigert sich jedoch, die Entschuldigung abzugeben. Für den angestellten Vater ist die Situation erst einmal sehr schwierig, da er in die Machtstrukturen der Gesellschaft eingebunden ist. Als es jedoch um das weitere Vorgehen gegenüber Saeroyi geht, stellt er sich hinter seinen Sohn und quittiert seinen Job.

In der Folgezeit renoviert er gemeinsam mit seinem Sohn ein Lokal und eröffnet dieses. Während Saeroyi eines Abends auf die Rückkehr seines Vaters wartet, erscheint nicht dieser, sondern die Polizei. Die Polizisten teilen ihm mit, dass sein Vater bei einem Unfall mit Fahrerflucht umgekommen sei. Das Leben von Saeroyi ändert sich somit schlagartig.
