It comes as no great shock to anyone when people accidentally drown in a port city. But this time it happened to an experienced sailor who was sunk with a stone statue. The only one who seems capable of the crime is Guo De You who can hold his breath for long periods of time. The son of the victim, Ding Mao, also suspects him and tries to prove his guilt with his forensic talent. But as he dives deeper into the case, more and more contradictions arise.
The both of them start to work together to find the real culprit. During their investigation, they come across a case from 20 years ago and find links to a mysterious organisation working in the background. Diesmal hat es jedoch einen erfahrenen Seemann erwischt, versenkt mit einer Steinstatue. Der Einzige, der für die Tat infrage kommt, ist Detektiv Guo De You, der als einziger in der Lage ist, lange genug für die Tat unter Wasser zu bleiben. Auch Ding Mao, Sohn des Getöteten, glaubt an dessen Schuld und setzt mit seinem forensischen Talent alles daran, den Detektiv zu überführen, doch je mehr Informationen er sammelt, desto mehr Widersprüche zeigen sich. So tut er sich mit Guo De You zusammen, um den wahren Täter zu finden. Sie kommen dabei einem Fall von vor 20 Jahren und einer rätselhaften Organisation auf die Spur, die im Hintergrund ihre Fäden zu spinnen scheint. Und die ganze Situation wird mystischer als gedacht, als sich weitere Fälle ereignen und Guo De You nicht nur Medium Gu Ying ins Boot holt, sondern auch auf seine ganz besondere Fähigkeit zurückgreifen muss – eine Fähigkeit, die er seither geheim hielt und die mit dem Rauch einer magischen Pfeife zu tun hat …
