Gaksital (2012)

In the beginning of the 20th century, Japanese forces invaded Korea, driving the people apart: One half just lives with the fact that the Japanese now rule over them, the other half still fights for their freedom. Many people fell victim to this rebellion, just like Lee Kang-To’s father, and even his brother Kang-San is now mentally ill after being tortured for information. To leave this rebellion behind him, Kang-To got himself into the ranks of the Japanese military-police system. Now he is a highly respected but cold-hearted officer, who even goes against his own people.

One day he is ordered to arrest the criminal Mok Dam Sa Ri, but is interrupted by a masked saviour, who helps said criminal and his daughter Mok Dan flee. It doesn’t take long until the masked saviour becomes known for his actions to help the Korean people and is called by the name of “Bridal Mask.” Kang-To becomes obsessed with the idea to bring “Bridal Mask” down and so he gets in touch with his childhood friend Shunji Takeda and Mok Dan in a very unpleasant way …

Die Invasion der japanischen Truppen in Korea Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts hat das Land und das Volk gespalten; die eine Hälfte hat sich damit abgefunden, die andere kämpft als Rebellion verzweifelt gegen eine Übermacht. Dieser Rebellion fiel auch der Vater von Lee Kang-To zum Opfer und auch sein Bruder Kang-San ist nach den brutalen Verhörmethoden der Japaner geistig stark beeinträchtigt und auf dem Niveau eines Kindes. Kang-To selbst, der mittlerweile die Nase voll von irgendwelchen Rebellionsbewegungen hat, hat in der japanischen Militärpolizei eine steile Karriere hingelegt und ist für sein autoritäres und zielstrebiges Auftreten berühmt und berüchtigt. Der brutale Drill und der ständige Kampf gegen Rebellen haben ihn brutal und gefühlskalt werden lassen. Als er den Verbrecher Mok Dam Sa Ri verhaftet, taucht auf einmal ein maskierter Retter auf und verhilft ihm und Tochter Mok Dan zur Flucht. Der Maskierte wird schnell unter dem Namen „Bridal Mask“ bekannt und es dauert gar nicht lange, bis das Schicksal Kang-To, dessen japanischen Freund Shunji Takeda und Mok Dan auf sehr unglückliche Art zusammenbringt. Und das zentrale Schlüsselelement ist „Bridal Mask“, von dem Kang-To wie besessen ist.
