Die beiden Geschwister, Fräulein Marilla Cuthbert und Herr Matthew Cuthbert, wohnen zusammen in Green Gables, einer Farm in Avonlea, die sich auf der Prinz-Edward-Insel befindet. Das Geschwisterpaar beschließt, einen verwaisten Jungen zu adoptieren, damit dieser ihnen auf ihrer Farm zur Hand gehen kann. Aufgrund einiger Missgeschicke haben sie nun anstatt eines Jungen, ein altkluges elfjähriges Mädchen namens Anne Shirley als neues Familienmitglied. Anne ist intelligent und aufgeweckt, stets bemüht es allen recht zu machen. Etwas unzufrieden ist sie jedoch mit ihrem Namen, ihrem blassen, sommersprossigen Gesicht und ihren roten Haaren. Nichtsdestoweniger ist sie ein lebhaftes und fantasievolles Mädchen, das sich schnell auf der Insel eingelebt hat und das Leben genießt.
