Cartoonist Keiji Nakazawa was seven years old and living in Hiroshima in the early days of August 1945 when the city was destroyed by an atomic bomb dropped by the U.S.A. Volume One begins shortly before the bomb was dropped, and ends on the day of the bombing itself.

Die Hauptfigur ist der Junge Gen, der mit seiner Familie in Hiroshima lebt und dort die letzten Tage des Krieges mit all seinem Schrecken und seinem Wahnsinn miterlebt. Beim Abwurf der Atombombe auf seine Heimatstadt am 6. August 1945 sterben sein Vater, sein kleiner Bruder und seine Schwester; er und seine hochschwangere Mutter überleben wie durch ein Wunder. Im Weiterem wird beschrieben, wie er auf der Suche nach Nahrung für sich und seine Mutter durch das gigantische Trümmerfeld streift.

Anmerkung:
Der Original-Manga erschien in Deutschland 1982 beim Rowohlt Verlag und war der erste veröffentlichte Manga in Deutschland. Dieser wurde nach Band 1 bereits abgebrochen. 2004 bis 2005 veröffentlichte der Carlsen Verlag zum 60. Jahrestag des Abwurfs der Atombombe auf Hiroshima den Manga in einer Neuauflage, allerdings nur die ersten vier von insgesamt zehn Bänden. Im Jahr 2012 gab es von Band 1 und 2 eine weitere Neuauflage vom Süddeutsche-Zeitung-Verlag als gebundene Ausgabe innerhalb der Serie »Süddeutsche Zeitung Bibliothek – Graphic Novels« die ebenfalls nach diesem Band abgebrochen wurde.
