Il protagonista è un quattordicenne di nome Yusuke Urameshi, un piccolo delinquente che non ha rispetto né per le regole, né per le autorità. Nonostante ciò, un bel giorno si sacrifica per salvare un bambino che sta per essere investito da un’auto: la sua morte, non prevista nell’aldilà, crea un certo scompiglio (anche perché il bambino in questione sarebbe sopravvissuto lo stesso all’incidente, senza farsi un graffio). Per risolvere questa situazione incerta, gli viene proposto l’incarico di detective del mondo degli spiriti, e viene riportato in vita. Durante il corso delle varie indagini, incontrerà quelli che diventeranno suoi compagni inseparabili: Kuwabara Kazuma, un liceale come Yusuke; Hiei e Kurama, degli spettri dalle sembianze umane. La storia continua affrontando vari nemici tra cui "le 4 venerabili bestie", i fratelli Toguro, esseri dall’incontenibile forza affrontati durante un torneo delle arti marziali nere, i mostri dalla gold aura e infine il torneo che decide il re del mondo dei demoni, in cui vengono ribaltati tutti i punti di riferimento bene/male fino a quel momento stabiliti.
